Barbados opens Marcus Garvey Amphitheater

Image
On the evening of Nov. 28, residents from various areas across the island of Barbados gathered in Queens Park to witness the brilliantly designed architecture and the Marcus Garvey Amphitheater's official opening. After years of embracing the ideas of Garveyism, many felt it was an honor to be a part of the historical event. In his opening remarks, emcee for the evening Chrispen Hackett said the opening of the amphitheater is where "arts meet history and undertake the work… and it is not only a moment of brilliance but also one of history." Hackett noted that Marcus Garvey first visited Barbados in 1937, and since then, every "public man" in Barbados between 1918 and 1940 has been influenced and shaped by the late Marcus Garvey's work. Prime Minister Mia Mottley of Barbados told the United Nations General Assembly Debate on Friday that the world needs a “reset,” stating that, over the last four years, the global community has faced “poly-crises.” “We continue to wrestle with the climate crisis as a human family; we grapple with the legacy of the pandemic,” Mottley said during the 79th session of the General Assembly Debate. “We are now regrettably confronted by multiple theaters of war and scenes of horror and famine flowing from that war, armed conflict, instead of pursuing the development of citizens of every country,” she added. But even as he winds down before heading to Washington at the end of October, the main opposition People’s National Party (PNP) while congratulating him, wants to know if he is abandoning Andrew Holness’ cabinet as polls are showing that the governing Jamaica Labor Party (JLP) is trailing the PNP ahead of general elections scheduled for next year. Clarke announced his impending departure in the past week and will become the only national of the Caribbean and Central America to hold the post of deputy. “Dr. Clarke’s departure comes at a critical juncture for our country as we face serious economic challenges, including the spiraling cost of living and the negative growth impact of the recent hurricane. The timing of Dr. Clarke’s de...
